Costumes are great for development in all areas!
Articulation/Speech: choose a few words to embed in play. Ex working on /k/- coat on, cop, get in the car to go to work; working on /p, b, m/-part, more, pulse, put, etc.
Language: Naming actions that each occupation does, describing outfits, describing job roles
Pragmatics: Pretend play! You can work on greetings and partings, eye contact, and conversational skills.
Fine Motor/Visual Motor: putting on cloths, doing buttons, cutting
Sensory: ex: fireman–use a tub of water for water play to put out the fire; have each item in a bag of rice the child can get out. You can play barefoot in the grass or sand for additional input to the sensory system.
Gross Motor: You can have the child bend down and pick up pieces to put on or use. You can also place the objects around the room for an obstacle course.
